Pudong Party chief pushes for faster development of cultural industries

Weng Zuliang, Party secretary of the CPC Pudong New Area Committee, made an inspection tour to China Literature Group and China Movie Channel (Shanghai) Pictures Co Ltd on Tuesday to learn about their development and needs.

The inspection took place after Shanghai released a guideline for accelerating the development of cultural industries recently.

At China Literature, Weng and Tang Shiqing, director of the District Commission of Science and Technology, checked the company’s publication, their peripheral products, and their future development plans.

The company was listed in Hong Kong Stock Exchange last month. It now owns about 10 million intellectual properties and has signed contract with six million authors. In the past year it gave out 1 billion yuan (US$152 million) remuneration to its contract writers.

Weng congratulated the company on its successful listing, and he said he was happy to see famous intellectual properties were adopted into films and television series, especially the positive ones. He expressed his hope for the company to keep promoting quality works that embody China’s values.

At China Movie Channel (Shanghai) Pictures Co Ltd, which was just established last Sunday in Jinqiao area, Weng inspected the company’s office, Virtual Reality cinema, and listened to its plan for future development of movie-production technologies.

Cao Yin, director of the company, said they will keep improving their capabilities of filmmaking, and the company will work with post-production bases in Suzhou and Hangzhou, to complete their whole strategic layout. In the meantime, the company will dock with the cultural industries in Jinqiao Development Zone in Pudong New Area, to advance Pudong’s cultural industries.

At the seminar with the company leaders, Weng said that people now have higher demands for cultural products as Pudong’s economy is getting stronger. Shanghai Free Trade Zone has made a series of innovations to encourage filmmaking companies to make quality intellectual properties to tell China’s stories to the world.

Pudong New Area is the core function area of the city’s technology and innovation center, Weng added. It’s development also needs cultural products. Construction of a number of cultural facilities is now underway, such as the East Shanghai Museum. They will all serve as a driving force for developing cultural industries.
